Maria Elizabeth Mendes Ferreira was born in 1956 and is a native of Rio de Janeiro, in the southeast of Brazil. However, she spent her childhood and adolescence in the south, in Porto Alegre. At the age of 8, she was introduced to the world of paints, brushes and crayons, by Sister Luiza Olympia, her art teacher at the Sévigné school, where she studied. At 16 years of age, she joined the local city hall's Studio of Free Artistic Expression, where she began drawing live models, under the orientation of professor Danúbio Gonçalves.

As an adult, and back in Rio de Janeiro once more, Mendes Ferreira decided to follow another profession. She graduated in Communication, with a post-graduation in Marketing. But in 1991, she abandoned a career in advertising, in order to go back to her first love; PAINTING! And from there on, she never looked back.

Mendes Ferreira is listed in Júlio Louzada's "Artes Plásticas Brasil" (Brazilian Art) 1996, Volume nº 8 (pages 563 and 564). In 2001 she was invited to be included in the yearbook "Artes & Artistas Brasil" (Brazilian Arts & Artists).

Artístic Style: Up to 1999, Mendes Ferreira was refining her technique and developing a body of work bearing the characteristics of representational art. At the end of the year 2000, start to dedicate herself to contemporary art too. Her style explores the freedom of movement and volume, playing with space and creating geometrical motion with her forms and colors
